We live in a golden age of comics related media. Never has there been such quality and variety of shows based on comics properties, from big hits like The Walking Dead to newly minted hits like the Flash. With these hit shows, the stage is set for a come back after the winter break. Now is the perfect time to look ahead and see what new shows are coming in 2016. From classics like Preacher to newer comic hits like Wynonna Earp, we still have a lot to look forward to in 2016.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Season: The first season debuts January 21
Network: The CW
Stars: Brandon Routh, Dominic Purcell, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller, Caity Lotz, Ciarra Renee, Dominic Purcell, Arther Davill, Franz Drameh
Comic Book Published By: Based on characters and concepts by DC Comics
Another comics based television show from the team behind the Flash, Arrow and Supergirl. While the characters are known to core comics fan the highest profile members of the team would have to be the Atom and Firestorm. It will be interesting to see if they can provide enough screen time to get to know these characters well. The cast has been strong in their appearances on other shows in this universe and that should continue here. Also DC beats Marvel this time by being the first to bring a super team ala the Avengers together on the small screen.

Lucifer

Status: The first season debuts January 25
Network: Fox
Stars: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Lina Esco, Kevin Alejandro, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachel Harris, Scarlett Estevez
Comic Book Published By: Based on characters and concepts from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint
Based on the very popular VERTIGO series of the same name, this show will operate in the fertile playground of glitzy, glamorous and still seedy Los Angeles. Lucifer comes to us from the Sandman universe so it will be interesting to see if DC decides to explore that aspect of the character and bring in Sandman and the other characters, considering there hasn’t been any word from DC regarding the Sandman live action movie. This may be where DC can pull a Marvel and have the movie and television crossover to build a universe.

Luke Cage

Status: Season 1 expected in 2016
Network: Netflix
Stars: Michael Colter
Comic Book Published By: Marvel Comics
Since his run in Brian Michael Bendis’s Avengers run, Luke’s profile has been on the rise. He has long since moved beyond the blaxploitation character he began life as and it will be interesting to see how this iteration of Luke operates in a world rapidly filling up with superheroes of which he wants nothing to do with. Also this will series will hopefully flesh out some of the more interesting aspects of Luke that were touched on in the Jessica Jones series, while pushing us closer to an Iron Fist TV show.marvel-luke-cage-netflix-mike-colter

Preacher

Status: Season 1 to debut in 2016
Network: AMC
Stars: Ruth Negga, Joe Gilgun, Dominic Cooper, Ian Colletti, Lucy Griffiths, Elizabeth Perkins, Jamie Ann Allman, Derek Wilson
Comic Book Published By: DC Comics’ Vertigo Imprint
Based on the landmark comic series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion, this series comes to AMC from the team of Seth Rogen and Adam Goldberg and shows much promise as evidenced by its stellar teaser trailer. Dominic Cooper known to most comic fans as Tony Stark’s dad will take on the lead role. AMC has shown that they can have a knack for making darker more questionable characters relatable and even likeable what with their success with TV shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, no less should be expected of this series.

Outcast

Status: Season 1 to debut in 2016
Network: Cinemax
Stars: Patrick Fugit, Philip Glenister, Gabriel Bateman
Comic Book Published By: Image/Skybound’s Outcast by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta
This is a newer comic and the show was greenlit before the comic even hit shelves. Coming from the creator of the Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, this show should be a dark yet fun and interesting ride.

Wynonna Earp

Status: Season 1 expected in 2016
Network: Syfy

Another newer comic series from IDW Publishing, this show has been described as Justified meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.wynonnaearp2-ea051
